The Plaid Fad~By Jillian Phillips
What is it about plaid that makes teenagers so eager to wear it? Well the students of Leo Hayes High School seem to be quite obsessed with the new plaid fad that has apparently swept over the population of young people in our city. Brittany Sharpe, Grade 12 student says “It’s what the stores are selling now, and if you see someone wearing it and you think it looks good then you’re gonna go out and buy it too.”

I decided to see how many students actually wear plaid or something with plaid on it, during a normal day at LHHS. I made an announcement for everyone wearing plaid to come down to the cafeteria for a picture. The result of this idea was 39 students. This is definitely not every student who wore plaid that day, but it is a good percentage of them. “I think so many people are wearing plaid because it’s homey and comfortable” says Susannah Bateman, Grade 12, Leo Hayes student. This fashionable country style has risen once again.

Is it the result of our economy?
According to Jackie Burns, MSN Shopping Contributor; For the most part, we have a deflated economy to thank (or blame) for the movement. Plaid shirts represent a strong work ethic and during periods of high unemployment, we are desperate to appear ready and willing to work at”

The Garden of Beadin'

By Jennifer Harding
Tired of your everyday routine and downtime activities? Why not try something new and visit The Garden of Beadin’. The new shop, which opened up last spring, is a jewelry making studio that offers casual or more formal classes in perfecting the art of beading. The studio carries a wide variety of beads, wires and jewelry making supplies to work with. Private lessons and parties can be booked by calling ahead and scheduling a time that suits you, or you can just stop in with a few friends and begin creating. Another option is the scheduled classes which run one night a week for 4 consecutive weeks. This might be a good option to consider this month especially because all classes in the month of October are free; all you need to pay is the cost of the supplies. The teachers at The Garden of Beadin’ are experts in making, and instructing to make, rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches of all kinds. They are open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm with the exception of Thursday when they are open 10am-9pm. If you’re interested and would like to learn more about The Garden of Beadin’ you can visit their website at www.thegardenofbeadin.ca or stop by the studio at 88 York Street.

Word on the StreetBy Tara Graham
Leo Hayes High School is a very diverse school with people of all different beliefs, assumptions and ideas. So it is important that people's voices get heard so that people can see how the students from our school are affected by certain situations day to day. Word on the Street is a new addition to the school newspaper where you can read about your classmates' concerns at LHHS about the issues in our everyday lifestyle. It is also important to get involved and speak up! Anyone who is interested in being in the school newspaper or the OnLion in the Word on the Street column please don’t be shy to let us know that you are inspired to do so. Enjoy!
